What is the Indigenous Mentorship Network Program?
The CIHR-Institute of Indigenous Peoples' Health (IIPH) strives to advance the research agenda to improve the health of Indigenous Peoples in Canada. Strengthening research networks and facilitating capacity exchange for Indigenous health researchers is an integral activity to ensure systemic growth in research capacity and development.
IIPH is committed to building capacity among emerging Indigenous health researchers. To further this goal, IIPH is funding a transformative and paradigm shifting Indigenous Mentorship Network Program (IMNP) to meet the needs of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis trainees and New Investigators.
The goal of this funding opportunity is to create distinctive and culturally relevant cohort learning opportunities and tailored mentoring activities. These activities will create support mechanisms, attend to the psychosocial needs of trainees and New Investigators, and identify system and individual barriers hindering First Nations, Inuit, and Métis trainees and New Investigators in Indigenous health research.
Objectives
IMNP activities will complement core course work or degree programs and early career responsibilities in research design, methodology and other core content areas. To achieve these objectives, activities may include:
- Consultation with trainees and New Investigators to create a community of mentors and support networks to exchange ideas and promising practices on mentoring
- Combining resources with leading institutions active in Indigenous health research
- Hosting events to stimulate face-to-face learning
- Setting up web-based tools and approaches for ongoing support
The funded Indigenous Mentorship Networks are expected to attend annual workshops to ensure the cohesion and collaboration of the funded Networks.
