Embedded Clinician Researcher Salary Awards
CIHR is pleased to announce the 2016 Embedded Clinician Researcher Salary Award recipients. This new salary award program is designed to build capacity for, and support the creation of, Learning Health Systems – accountable healthcare organizations that mobilize research for transformation and impact, particularly to improve patient experience and outcomes, and quality of life for persons with chronic conditions.
The Embedded Clinician Researcher Salary Award program is led by the CIHR Community Based Primary Health Care Signature Initiative (CBPHC) and the CIHR Institute of Health Services and Policy Research (IHSPR), in partnership with five CIHR Institutes and Initiatives (Institutes of Aboriginal People's Health (IAPH, Cardiovascular and Respiratory Health (ICRH), Musculoskeletal Health and Arthritis (IMHA), Nutrition, Metabolism and Diabetes (INMD), and CIHR’s Strategy for Patient Oriented Research (SPOR)), as well as two external partners (Health Quality Ontario (HQO), and New Brunswick Health Research Foundation (NBHRF)).
Embedded Clinician Researcher Salary Awards were offered to 20 early- to mid-career health services and policy researchers holding active licensure as a health professional that are clinicians first but need protected time to engage in research that is critical to advancing change. The awardees received $75,000/year for 4 years and were required to have matched funding from the health system partner organization where they are embedded in the amount of $25,000/year (cash) toward salary and $50,000/year (cash or in-kind) toward research costs. The total CIHR investment was $5,850,000 over 4 years.

"The Embedded Clinician Researcher Salary Award complements CIHR's huge investment in SPOR (Strategy for Patient Oriented Research). It's intended to build capacity for creating learning health systems in Canada. We want to increase the number of scientists embedded within the health system that have both the credibility of being a clinician and the skills to carry out research that improves healthcare as it is delivered on the ground."
"Our role at HQO is to find solutions to healthcare challenges. We need to be able study the system and find ways to improve health quality across the province. Clinician researchers are a critical piece of the puzzle. They live and breathe the health system where they practice and have the capacity to generate the evidence needed to support system transformation."
"CIHR – Institute of Musculoskeletal Health and Arthritis is dedicated to building research capacity among clinician-researchers in Canada. These much-needed individuals are essential to health care communities today where multidisciplinary teams work together towards better health outcomes for patients. Encouraging and supporting clinician-researchers is an important contribution toward the end goal of improving health care delivery for Canadians."
