Institute Advisory Board Member Application and Guidelines
The 2024 IAB Membership Cycle is now closed. The IAB application will remain open and you may submit an application for consideration in the 2025 Membership Cycle.
The number of members on an IAB is between 8 and 14. Selection criteria and composition of the IABs is available under the IAB Selection Criteria. Consult the CIHR Institute web pages to review their specific areas of focus.
How to apply to become an IAB member
To apply to IAB membership cycle, you will need the following:
- Create a ResearchNet account and obtain your CIHR PIN
- Create a CIHR IAB CV using a Common CV account
- Submit your completed application through ResearchNet
Step 1 - Create a ResearchNet account and obtain your CIHR PIN
- Access ResearchNet and use the "Register" link to request a new account.
- If you do not already have a CIHR PIN, sign in to your ResearchNet account. Once signed in, click on your name (top right of the screen) and select from the drop-down menu "Register for a CIHR PIN" and complete the form.
- It takes approximately one working day to receive confirmation of your PIN.

Step 1 - Create a CIHR ResearchNet Account and obtain your CIHR PIN
The first step to apply to the Institute Advisory Board membership cycle is to create a ResearchNet account. If you already have a ResearchNet account, you may skip this step.
On the Institute Advisory Board Member Application and Guidelines page, click the "Register" link. This will bring you to the user profile registration page.
Fill out all the required fields on this form. Please be aware of fields that have specific formatting requirements like dashes in your phone number.
When you have completed all the fields, click "Submit". You will be redirected to the "Sign-in" hyperlink. Click the "Sign-in" link, and you will be redirected to the ResearchNet "Sign in" page. Using your email and password, sign into ResearchNet.
The next step in the ResearchNet registration process is to register for your CIHR PIN. This is a personal identification number that will be included with your application.
To obtain your CIHR PIN, click the upper right tab with your name. From the dropdown, click "Register for a CIHR PIN". Fill in your information on the page.
Several fields on this form use codes for the entries such as Country and Province. To obtain the code for your entry, click on the note icon located beside the field box. This will bring you to a search page. Type in the name you would like to find and click "Search". The correct code will appear. Click the code to have it entered into the field box on the main form.
Once you have completed all the fields, Click "Submit". You will see a confirmation page of your PIN request. Please note that these requests are typically processed within one business day. You will receive an email confirming your PIN request has been processed.
Then return to the ResearchNet homepage by clicking "Return to your application".
The last step to register for your PIN is to validate your CIHR PIN.
Navigate to the upper right tab of the homepage that has your name. Click "Validate your CIHR PIN".
Navigate to the CIHR PIN notification email in your inbox, and input the PIN into the field. Then click validate.
Finally click the return to homepage hyperlink.
Step 2 - Create a CIHR IAB CV
- Login to your Common CV account. If you do not have a Common CV account, click the "Register" button to create your account.
- For the IAB application, a CIHR IAB CV is required. This CV template can be accessed by selecting CIHR from the Funding CV.
- You will be required to validate your PIN on the Common CV system prior to submitting your CIHR IAB CV. If you have not previously validated your PIN, choose the PIN/System Account option from the main menu and follow the instructions. For additional information, click on the "Register with CIHR" link.
Complete and submit the CIHR IAB template.
Note: Record the CV confirmation number you receive when you submit your CIHR IAB CV. It needs to be entered in the ResearchNet application (next step) in order to complete your IAB application.

Step 2 - Create a CIHR IAB CV
The second step in applying to the Institute Advisory Board membership cycle is to create a CIHR IAB CV within the Common CV. This is an Institute Advisory Board specific version of your CV that will be evaluated with your application.
Click the "Common CV" hyperlink on the Institute Advisory Board Member Application and Guideline page and then select your language of choice on the Canadian Common CV entry page.
On the Canadian Common CV homepage, Click the upper right "Login" tab. If you do not already have a Common CV account, click the "Register" button.
Fill out your information and be aware of fields that may have any formatting requirements. Click "Submit" after you complete the form. Read through the Privacy Notice Statement and Data Sharing Notice information, click "I agree" to complete your account registration. You will be redirected to the Canadian Common CV homepage.
To create your CIHR IAB CV, navigate to the "CV" tab on the top panel on the homepage and click "Funding". For Funding Source, use the dropdown box and select "CIHR". For CV type, use the dropdown box and select "CIHR IAB". Click the "Load" button. This will provide you with the CIHR IAB CV template. Each section of the CV is listed. To add your information to each of the sections, select the pencil icon. You will be taken to a new page to enter in the relevant information. Click "Done" when you have completed entering the information.
As you complete each section, a green check mark will appear. If there are any problems with your entries, a red "x" will appear. Click on the pencil icon to edit and correct any problems. Click "Done" to save your changes.
Before you can submit your CIHR IAB CV, you need to link your ResearchNet PIN to your Common CV account. To do this, click the "PIN/System Account" tab on the top of the page. You will be asked to enter your CIHR PIN.
To find your CIHR PIN, you can go to your inbox to locate your PIN in the confirmation email from CIHR. The subject line will read "CIHR PIN notification / Avis - NIP des IRSC".
Or alternatively navigate to the ResearchNet website. Log in to ResearchNet and select the upper right tab with your name on it. And then click "ResearchNet account settings" from the dropdown option.
Scroll down. You will find your CIHR PIN.
Input your agency as CIHR along with your PIN and then click "Validate". Read through the information and once you are satisfied, click "I agree" and then click "Done".
To submit your CIHR IAB CV, Click the "CV" tab and click the "Funding" drop down option. And then choose your funding source as CIHR along with your CV Type as CIHR IAB. If you have correctly linked your CV with your CIHR PIN, you will see that the PIN/System Account status indicates "valid". Click "Load".
To preview the CV that will be submitted with your IAB application, Click the "Preview" button. You can download a PDF version of your CV to review. If you would like to make any changes, click on the pencil icon next to the relevant section and make your desired changes. Click "Done" when you are finished editing a section.
Once you are satisfied with your CV and ready to submit, click "Submit". Read through the agreement and click "I Agree". After this step, you will see a confirmation message that your CV was submitted written in green. Record the confirmation number that is provided as you will need it for the next step of the application process.
Step 3 - Submit your completed application through ResearchNet
- Login to your ResearchNet account.
- Click on the 'Get Involved' menu located to the left of the screen and select from the drop-down menu 'Institute Advisory Board (IAB) Membership'. Select "Institute Advisory Board – Complete Application" from the Activity menu.
- Complete all the required tasks in the task menu.
- Review and submit your application.
Note: A completed self-identification questionnaire is required for all IAB applications. Selecting “I prefer not to answer” for one or more of the questions will not prevent your candidacy from being considered. This data is collected specifically for IAB membership purposes (which falls outside of the scope of the privacy statement for CIHR’s applicant self-identification questionnaire). Responses will not affect your eligibility for funding from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. Step 3 - Submit your completed application through ResearchNet
The final step in applying to the Institute Advisory Board membership cycle is to submit your completed application through ResearchNet.
Once you have logged in to your ResearchNet page, click the "Get involved" button on the left-hand side to access the Institute Advisory Board application. Then select the "Institute advisory board IAB membership" option.
Then click the hyperlink "Institute Advisory Board - Complete Application" under the activity list.
This will bring you to the IAB application and you will see a Task List. Clicking each task will bring you to a page where you can enter the required information. Once you are satisfied with your inputs, scroll down and click "Save". To navigate back to the main page, click "Return to the task list". As you complete each task, a green check mark will appear indicating that all fields in the task are complete.
Under the "Enter Volunteer Profile Information" task, you will be asked to provide a CCV confirmation number. This is the confirmation number that was given when you submitted your CIHR IAB CC through the Common CV website. Please see Step 2 for information on obtaining your CCV confirmation number if you have not submitted a CIHR IAB CV.
Under the "Complete/Upload Self-identification questionnaire" task, you will be asked to submit a self-identification questionnaire. To access the questionnaire, click on the task. You will need to download the questionnaire using the hyperlink "Self-identification questionnaire". Fill out the form and save it to your computer as a PDF file. To upload your completed self-identification questionnaire, attach it using the "Choose File" button and click the "Attach" button.
After you have completed all tasks and are ready to submit your IAB membership application, please click the hyperlink "Submit Application" in the task list.
Be sure to read all the information before selecting the "I accept the privacy statement notice" option and click the "Submit to CIHR". Then you will see a warning message, if you are sure you are ready to submit, Click "Submit Application". You will receive a "Submission Successful" message. Also, CIHR will send you a confirmation email in one to two working days.
Then click the "Return to home" hyperlink to return to your IAB application.
