CIHR reaffirms commitment to research collaboration with the European Union
Builds on more than 20 years of successful EU-Canada S&T partnerships
The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) has announced a commitment of $15 million to support ten joint transnational calls for proposals in 2018 under the EU Framework Programme Horizon 2020.
This funding will support the involvement of Canadian researchers in multinational research consortia in areas such as personalized medicine, rare diseases, gender and health, neurodegenerative diseases, mental health, cardiovascular diseases, ICT for ageing well, and storing/sharing human- omics data.
Horizon 2020 is the European Union’s Framework Programme for Research and Innovation for 2014-2020. As a third country, CIHR engages in Horizon 2020 predominantly through Public to Public (P2P) networks involving EU member states, other third and associated countries, and the European Commission. Currently, CIHR is involved in 13 active P2Ps and 4 Coordination and Support Actions (CSA) within the health sector.
Over the last three years, CIHR has seen the highest rates of linkages with Europe in its funded projects. Through Horizon 2020, CIHR has participated in 28 Joint Transnational Calls, funded the Canadian component of 89 multinational teams and invested $27 million.
"CIHR greatly values its relationship with the European Commission as both Canada and Europe have many shared interests in the health science sector," says Michel Perron, CIHR's Executive Vice-President. "Our participation and investment in Horizon 2020 will support the creation of new collaborations that will advance science in many important areas."
Canada has a long history of productive research collaboration with the European Union. The year 2016 marked 20 years of Canada's cooperation under the EU-Canada Science and Technology Agreement.
