CIHR GBA Plus Framework
The CIHR GBA Plus Framework seeks to build GBA Plus organizational capacity and sustain the practice of GBA Plus across CIHR through three streams:
- GBA Plus in CIHR-Funded Research
- This stream of work focuses on the research that CIHR funds, and aims to ensure that equity, diversity and inclusion considerations are taken into account in research design, methods, analysis and interpretation, and/or dissemination of findings, as well as the research team and work environment;
- GBA Plus applied to research ensures the potential different impacts of research outcomes on diverse groups are taken into consideration;
- CIHR operationalizes this commitment, initially focused on sex and gender, through the Sex- and Gender-Based Analysis (SGBA) in Research Action PlanFootnote 1 Work is underway to further integration of other intersecting identity factors in health research.
- GBA Plus in CIHR's Funding System
- This stream of work focuses on the people who apply for, and receive, CIHR funding, and aims to ensure equitable access to CIHR funds across eligible individuals;
- GBA Plus applied to CIHR’s funding system ensures the potential different impacts of funding processes, policies, and decisions on diverse groups are taken into consideration;
- CIHR operationalizes this commitment through the Equity Strategy and accompanying frameworks (such as the Gender Equity Framework) and action plans (such as the Official Languages and Minority Communities Action Plan). Work is underway to co-develop an action plan to address systemic racism in CIHR’s funding system and an action plan to improve accessibility in CIHR’s funding system.
- GBA Plus in CIHR's workplace
- This stream of work focuses on the people working at, managing, and advising CIHR, and aims to ensure CIHR conducts its business in an equitable manner, including how we implement the two streams of work noted above;
- GBA Plus applied to the work environment ensures the potential different impacts of business decisions on diverse groups are taken into consideration;
- CIHR operationalizes this commitment through federal legislation (such as the Employment Equity Act, the Canadian Multiculturalism Act, the Official Languages Act) and policies (such as the Harassment in the Workplace Policy).
CIHR GBA Plus Responsibility Centre
Housed within the Science Policy Branch of the Research Programs Portfolio, CIHR’s GBA Plus Responsibility Centre monitors the implementation of the GBA Plus framework and supports the practice of GBA Plus across CIHR.
