2019 CIHR-IHSPR Article of the Year Award Recipient

Recognizing ground-breaking health services and policy research

The CIHR Institute of Health Services and Policy Research (CIHR-IHSPR) is pleased to announce that Dr. Gina Agarwal has received the 2019 CIHR-IHSPR Article of the Year Award. This award recognizes published research that has significantly contributed to the advancement of the field of health services and policy research in Canada.

The CIHR-IHSPR Article of the Year Review Committee selected the article, entitled “Evaluation of a community paramedicine health promotion and lifestyle risk assessment program for older adults who live in social housing: a cluster randomized trial.”, for its relevance to health services and policy research, as well as for the extent to which the article shows a clear impact (or potential impact) on policy, practice, or health outcomes.

In addition to receiving an award of $10,000, Dr. Agarwal was honoured at the Canadian Association for Health Services and Policy Research (CAHSPR) conference, held in Halifax on May 29-31, 2019.

Dr. Gina Agarwal

Dr Gina Agarwal is an Associate Professor in the Department of Family Medicine, McMaster University, where she works as a family physician with a busy family practice and trains residents. She has completed a PhD in Epidemiology at McMaster University and describes herself as a Primary Care Epidemiologist. Her program of research focuses on improving health systems for vulnerable populations, ensuring that they receive appropriate care at the right time and place.

Over the last 7 years Gina has led the development and rigorous evaluation of the Community Paramedicine at Clinic (CP@clinic) Program, which has improved quality of life and primary care access for over 2300 vulnerable older adults.

Her program of research has been widely published, highlighted by the Canadian Association Medical Journal and National Media, and has resulted in health system changes in Ontario.
