CIHR partners with the European Union to fund research in key areas
December 5, 2019
The Canadian Institutes of Health Research continues its long-standing collaboration with the European Commission by supporting nine joint transnational calls in 2020.
The Canadian dedicated funding will support the involvement of Canadian researchers in multinational research consortia in areas such as: rare diseases; neurodegenerative diseases; cardiovascular diseases; intergenerational inequalities; sensory disorders; the ethical, legal, and social aspects of neuroscience; smart living environments and transitions in care; antimicrobial resistance; and aging well with the support of digital solutions.
The research collaboration is part of the EU Framework Programme Horizon 2020. As a third country, Canada/CIHR engages in Horizon 2020 predominantly through Public to Public (P2P) networks involving EU member states, other third and associated countries, and the European Commission.
CIHR is currently involved in fifteen P2P networks within the health sector. Since 2010, CIHR has participated in 48 joint transnational calls and has funded over 145 multinational teams. The organization has invested over $45 million, and has committed an additional $6.7 million to the joint transnational calls in 2019 and $7 million to the nine joint transnational calls in 2020.
Horizon Europe will come into effect in 2021 and will be the biggest multilateral research and innovation programme in the world, with a proposed budget allocation of almost €100 billion, an increase of almost 30% (when adjusted for inflation) from Horizon 2020.
This year marks 23 years of Canada's cooperation under the EU-Canada Science and Technology Agreement.
