Statement on the discovery of graves at former residential schools
Message from the President
June 28, 2021
The heart-breaking discoveries of the remains of hundreds of children in Kamloops, British Columbia and on the Cowessess First Nation in Saskatchewan exemplify the terrible legacy of residential schools and their impact on Indigenous Peoples. Sadly, we will undoubtedly receive similar news in the months and years ahead as more searches are conducted across Canada.
Words cannot express the sorrow we feel over these unspeakable tragedies. As a CIHR family and as a health research community, we stand in solidarity with the survivors of residential schools, their descendants, their loved ones, and all Indigenous Peoples. We also take this moment to reflect on the importance of truth and reconciliation, just as we express our unshakeable commitment to working with First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities to create a healthier future for all Indigenous Peoples.
Michael J. Strong, MD, FRCP, FCAHS, FAAN
President, CIHR
