Overview
LGBTQIA/2S (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, asexual, and Two Spirit) communities experience worse health outcomes across the life course as compared to heterosexual and/or cisgender Canadians. LGBTQIA/2S communities' lived experiences suggest that these disparities and their potential solutions likely relate to intersecting forms of discrimination and oppression, including but not limited to racism, xenophobia, homophobia, heterosexism, and/or transphobia from both within and outside of LGBTQIA/2S communities. Intersectionality ꟷ a framework that is rooted in the grassroots community organizing of Black LGBTQIA/2S women - [PDF (293 KB) - external link], and has been put into practice by Indigenous communities since time immemorial – allows for the investigation of the multidimensional aspects of identity and experience, inclusive of historical, structural, and cultural context and processes of power, privilege, oppression, and discrimination.
The purpose of this funding opportunity is to fund one-year research projects for Community Organizations to explore barriers to and opportunities for positive physical, social and mental health outcomes at the intersections of sexual orientation, gender, race/ethnicity, racism, and/or additional intersecting social identities (e.g., age, disability, faith, immigrant status, Indigeneity, language) and/or social processes (e.g., ableism, classism, heterosexism, homophobia, transphobia, xenophobia).
It is expected that funded projects will align with the statement of values supported by participants at the Best Brains Exchange on Health Inequalities Among Sexual and Gender Minorities in Canada: 1) "Nothing about us without us", 2) decolonization, 3) prioritization of interventions that address root causes, 4) intersectionality, and 5) evidence-based approaches.
Community Organizations with no prior research experience are encouraged to apply to the Support Grant for Community-Led Projects on LGBGTQIA/2S Wellness through an Intersectional Lens.
Objectives
The objective of this funding opportunity is to generate and share knowledge that will achieve one or more of the following:
- Improve understanding of barriers to and opportunities for positive physical, social, and mental health outcomes for LGBTQIA/2S individuals, families and communities whose health is impacted by the intersections of their sexual orientation, gender, race/ethnicity, experiences of racism, and/or additional intersecting social identities, positions and processes, including but not limited to ableism, age, classism, disability, faith, heterosexism, homophobia, immigrant and/or refugee status, Indigeneity, language, transphobia and xenophobia;
- Inform the implementation and/or sustainability and scale-up of new or existing community-based interventions to improve health and wellness for LGBTQIA/2S communities from an intersectional perspective.
- Evaluate the reach, effectiveness, and benefits of community-based interventions to improve health and wellness for LGBTQIA/2S communities from an intersectional perspective.
Eligibility
- The Nominated Principal Applicant for this funding opportunity must be a Canadian non-governmental organization (including registered public schools and Indigenous community organizations) with a research or knowledge translation mandate. Organizations working primarily with racialized and/or Indigenous LGBTQIA/2S communities or demonstrating evidence of having prior meaningful and culturally safe involvement with these communities are especially encouraged to apply.
- Individuals and academic institutions are not eligible to apply as the Nominated Principal Applicant.
- The inclusion of Community Leaders, independent researchers, knowledge users and trainees as Principal Applicants or Co-Applicants on the applicant team is optional but encouraged.
