CIHR is joining forces with SSHRC to support the Race, Gender and Diversity Initiative
The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) is pleased to announce a partnership with the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) under the Race, Gender and Diversity Initiative. Together, the agencies will support social sciences and humanities projects on the themes of race, gender and diversity with a focus on health. This is in addition to SSHRC support for social sciences and humanities projects on the themes of race, gender and diversity that do not necessarily have a focus on health.

As stated in the Government of Canada’s Federal Budget 2021, “systemic racism and discrimination are a painful reality for too many people, especially for marginalized groups, including Indigenous, Black, and racialized people, those living with disabilities, and members of the LGBTQ2 communities.” Leadership by people from underrepresented and/or marginalized groups in research projects about race, gender and diversity is critical to ground the research in the lived experiences and histories of communities and to inform more rigorous and relevant policy and program design.
The main goal of the Race, Gender and Diversity Initiative is to fund community-based and community-led research partnerships with postsecondary institutions that are grounded in the lived experience of underrepresented and/or marginalized groups and that analyze the causes and persistence of systemic racism and discrimination. It is expected that the three-year partnership grants offered under this initiative will serve as hubs for challenge-oriented, community-led and community-based intersectional research and knowledge mobilization activities that incubate new research partnerships.
CIHR is committed to fostering an equitable, diverse, and inclusive health research ecosystem that values the perspectives and contributions of all and promotes research excellence. As such, 11 CIHR Institutes will join SSHRC to co-fund up to 16 social sciences and humanities projects on the themes of race, gender and diversity with a focus on various health research areas, as described below, representing a total of $3.6 million over three years.

How to apply
Interested applicants must submit their application to SSHRC’s Race, Gender and Diversity Initiative by the deadline of November 15, 2021 (8 p.m. ET). After receiving the applications, SSHRC will contact applicants whose project relates to health issues to confirm whether or not they wish to be considered for CIHR’s funding and to obtain permission to send a copy of their application to CIHR for relevance review. SSHRC and CIHR commit to fund meritorious projects based on a rank established by the merit review committee.
