World Health Day at CIHR
Dear colleagues,
Today marks World Health Day. This year’s theme – our planet, our health — highlights the interconnection between human, animal and environmental health and asks us to consider how we can do more to keep humans and the planet healthy. These issues are a cornerstone of CIHR’s work in global health.
It has been a year since the release of the CIHR Framework for Action on Global Health Research and CIHR has acted on many commitments outlined in the Framework including funding research in three specific areas: non-communicable diseases (NCD), sex, gender and health, and health emergencies. We have funded NCD-related research through the Global Alliance for Chronic Diseases (GACD), including this year’s call on NCD risk prevention over the life course. In partnership with the International Development Research Center (IDRC) and Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), CIHR launched Women RISE, an initiative focused on women’s health and economic empowerment for an equitable COVID-19 recovery.
We have established the CIHR Centre for Research on Pandemic Preparedness and Health Emergencies (CRPPHE), and continue to lead fora like the Scientific Advisory Committee on Global Health Research and the Global Research Collaboration for Infectious Disease Preparedness (GloPID-R) to ensure that Canada’s approach to global health is highly coordinated and aligned with international initiatives.
Finally, CIHR has adopted the Canadian Coalition for Global Health Research (CCGHR) principles, and recently launched a funding opportunity with IDRC to integrate the CCGHR Principles across the global health research ecosystem. This opportunity will help ensure that global health is practised in an equitable and anti-colonial way.
World Health Day is a moment to consider how intertwined the world is and reflect on our collective commitment to the health and well-being of people everywhere. Together, we can help create a healthier, more equitable and sustainable future.
Best,
Steven
