Notice of upcoming funding opportunity Catalyst Grant: Analysis of Canadian Longitudinal Study in Aging (CLSA) Data (2022)

The CIHR Institute of Aging, Institute of Population and Public Health, Institute of Gender and Health, and Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health in partnership with the Quebec Network for Research on Aging are thrilled to announce the return of the Catalyst Grant: Analysis of Canadian Longitudinal Study in Aging (CLSA) Data Funding Opportunity to catalyze and support the use of the available CLSA data in order to better understand how (individually and in combination) the biological, medical, psychological, social, lifestyle and/or economic aspects of people’s lives have an impact in both maintaining health and in the development of disease and disability as people age.

Canadian Longitudinal Study in Aging (CLSA) Data

In addition to the list of currently available CLSA data, which includes recent COVID-19 Questionnaire Study and COVID-19 Antibody Study data, the following data is available:

• Follow-up 1 (FUP1) bone density and body composition (derived from whole body DXA)
• New baseline medications variables
• Baseline cognitive normative data
• FUP1 environmental indicators (linked data)
• FUP1 chemistry report (blood biomarkers)
• First release of Follow-up 2 (FUP2) data (this includes alphanumeric data from questionnaires. It will exclude cognition, medications, physical measures)

New to the 2022 Competition

Researchers may propose research projects using CLSA data alone, or CLSA data in combination with other data sets/cohorts to enhance the scope of research questions that can be addressed. However, it is important to note that no identifiable information on CLSA participants can be released to researchers. Applications that require identification of participants to link individual information to other data sets will not be eligible for funding.

Research Areas

This funding opportunity (FO) will support projects which promote the use and analysis of CLSA data alone, or in combination with other data sets/cohorts. Any and all applications on any research area are welcomed. Additionally, there will be specific funding to target applications focused on the mandates of the Institutes of Circulatory and Respiratory Health, Population and Public Health. The Institute of Gender and Health (IGH) will support research focusing on the physical, social and mental health of LGBTQIA/2S communities. The Quebec Network for Research on Aging (Réseau québécois de recherche sur le vieillissement (RQRV) will provide a top-up to the highest ranked fundable application from the Province of Quebec in the general area of aging within the themes of cognitive and mental health, mobility, continuum of health care and services.

Funds available

The maximum amount per grant is $70,000 for up to 1 year.

Special Notes

• Researchers who propose to use additional datasets to the CLSA will have to demonstrate that the data they want to use will be available and accessible at the time of the application. Researchers will have to comply with the requirements of each data sets/cohorts. Please note this is for non-CLSA data. The CLSA Statistical Analysis Centre will confirm that the CLSA data requested as part of the grant application is available after the competition.
• Data related to research by, and with, First Nations, Inuit, Métis or Urban Indigenous communities whose traditional and ancestral territories are in Canada must be managed in accordance with data management principles developed and approved by those communities and based on free, prior and informed consent. This includes, but is not limited to, considerations of Indigenous data sovereignty, as well as data collection, ownership, protection, use, and sharing.
