Biography
Dr. Cheryl Barnabe is a Rheumatologist, Professor in the Departments of Medicine and Community Health Sciences in the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary, and a member of the Metis Nation of Alberta. She holds leadership roles as Vice-Chair for Indigenous Health in the Department of Medicine, and as the Deputy Director for the McCaig Institute for Bone and Joint Health. She is a Canada Research Chair in Rheumatoid Arthritis and Autoimmune Diseases, and the Arthur JE Child Chair in Rheumatology Outcomes Research. Her research program focusses on equity in health service delivery to improve arthritis outcomes, most specifically for Indigenous populations in Canada. A main contribution has been to provide national guidance on both the development and implementation of practice and treatment recommendations that address concerns of populations with arthritis who face health inequities, including rural and remote Canadians, persons from minority racial and ethnic populations, the elderly with frailty, persons with diversity in sexual orientation and gender identity and expression, and persons of low socioeconomic status.
