Launch of two HIV/AIDS and STBBI Community-Based Research (CBR) funding opportunities

The CIHR HIV/AIDS and STBBI Research Initiative has launched two CBR funding opportunities to strengthen and support a diverse, inclusive, and collaborative research community to create and mobilize knowledge for better and equitable prevention, testing, treatment, and care of HIV/AIDS and STBBI in Canada and around the world.

The Catalyst Grant aims to provide seed money to support HIV and/or other STBBI CBR planning and development activities and/or research activities which represent a first step towards the pursuit of more comprehensive funding opportunities.

  • $1,000,000 is available to fund 10 grants for up to one year in General and Indigenous streams.

The Operating Grant aims to contribute to the creation, dissemination and use of health-related knowledge, and to help develop research capacity, by supporting original, high-quality projects proposed and conducted in partnership between the community and academia.

  • $1,800,000 is available to fund 4 grants for up to 3 years in General and Indigenous streams.

What do we mean by community-based research?

CBR is a community-driven and/or community-led approach to research that supports collaborative partnerships between Community Leaders, community members, particularly people with lived/living experience, and researchers from academic or other research institutions. CBR also promotes the participatory action of community members and people with lived/living experience throughout the research process. Project are aligned with community priorities and to maximize the potential to impact the health of people living with or at risk for infection with HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis C and other STBBI.

What’s new?

For this launch, we have implemented some changes to the CBR Catalyst and Operating Grants. Here are some highlights of the changes:

  • Revised some of the language to emphasize community-driven or community-led partnerships.
  • Modified the eligibility for knowledge users who must be from non-governmental/non-profit organizations.
  • The Catalyst grants have revised objectives to focus on planning, partnership development and funds to support grant writing.
  • For the Operating grant, additional funds are available to teams whose primary research focus is in northern, remote and/or geographically isolated communities.
  • Reduced the proposal page requirement (for Operating grants only).
