Message from IIPH Leadership

Dear colleagues,

Further to Dr. Strong's message, from May 16, we would like to update you on the current events at the Institute of Indigenous Peoples’ Health (IIPH), this time focusing on the Institute Advisory Board (IAB).

Each of CIHR’s 13 Institute Advisory Boards advises on Institute-specific issues and cross-Institute initiatives. Institute Scientific Directors benefit from the advice and guidance of an IAB composed of volunteers from Canada and abroad with a wide range of experience and expertise. Being part of an IAB is a great opportunity to advance an Institute’s national health research agenda.

The Advisory Board for the Institute of Indigenous Peoples’ Health includes strong Indigenous representation and voices that focus on improving and promoting the health of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples. This is in line with the CIHR Strategic Plan, informed by engagement with Indigenous partners and communities, specifically the top-level priority (Priority C), focused on accelerating self-determination of Indigenous Peoples in health research.

This spring, the Advisory Board welcomed several new members: Sarah de Leeuw, Karen Hall, Sameera Hussain, Karen Lawford, Roderick McCormick, and Robert (Bobby) Henry. In addition, CIHR’s Governing Council has appointed Dr. Christopher Mushquash as Chair of the IAB, effective May 25, 2023. This follows the departure of Dr. Debbie Martin, who stepped down from her role of IAB Chair in February. We take this opportunity to thank Debbie for her vision, leadership, and generous advice over her years on the Board.

We would like to extend a warm welcome to the new members of the Advisory Board and encourage everyone to get to know them better.

CIHR benefits greatly from the advice, perspective, and expertise of the many volunteers who generously serve on CIHR Boards and Committees. We recognize that only by listening attentively and working together with First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples, can CIHR make meaningful change to advance the health and well-being of Indigenous Peoples and all Canadians.
