Official languages: applying for a grant
We are committed to promoting equitable access to CIHR funding opportunities by:
- Ensuring that funding opportunities enable the participation of both official language communities (funding opportunities are clear and complete and available in both official languages)
- Providing applicants with equitable access to information and resources in the official language of their choice (notices, applicant webinars, instructions, and Contact Centre support provided in both official languages).
- Allowing for longer page limits: Applications written in French have 20% more space (approximately 2 pages) than applications written in English.
- Monitoring and promoting the participation of official language minority institutions, researchers and students in our programs.
We encourage the community to submit applications in their official language of choice. CIHR has systems in place to ensure that grant applications can be reviewed in both English and French. All applicants are entitled to receive services in the official language of their choice.
Conditions of funding
Mandatory for grants that have knowledge mobilization products as part of the research outputs and are pan-Canadian in scope (e.g., networks, platforms): All information intended for public consumption, for the purposes of informing and engaging stakeholders (e.g., website content, information pamphlets, guidelines, promotional and event-related material), must be provided in both official languages (English and French) and should be developed using plain language practices.
Allowable costs
Costs related to the translation and preparation of information/material intended for public consumption for the purposes of informing and engaging stakeholders (e.g., website content, information pamphlets, guidelines, promotional and event-related material) are an eligible use of tri-agency funds.
