Message from Norman Rosenblum, INMD Scientific Director
February 2019
This past month, The Honourable Ginette Petitpas Taylor, Minister of Health, announced the release of Canada’s new Food Guide. I was pleased to see that the release of the Food Guide was accompanied by an overview of the scientific evidence on the relationships between food, nutrients and health in a report entitled Food, Nutrients and Health: Interim Evidence Update 2018. This evidence was used by Health Canada in the development of the Food Guide.
Generating new knowledge and supporting its translation into effective policies, programs and products, and improved health for Canadians, is at the heart of CIHR’s mandate. For this reason, INMD has worked closely with Health Canada to support policy-relevant research in nutrition and health. For example, INMD partnered with Health Canada to support research on Sugar and Health. These grants are profiled on the INMD web site.
Knowledge translation (KT) is a dynamic and iterative process that includes synthesis, dissemination, exchange and ethically-sound application of knowledge. It’s part of CIHR’s mandate and included in CIHR’s current strategic plan, Health Research Roadmap II: Capturing Innovation to Produce Better Health and Health Care for Canadians, which includes commitments to foster a culture of excellence in KT and to accelerate transformative changes in health and the health system, with the overall goal of achieving impact. As the Institute Advisory Board works to develop a new Strategic Plan for INMD, KT will be considered fundamental to achieving impact.
Stay warm!

Scientific Director, CIHR-INMD
