Launch CPHO Report funding opportunity

Dear colleagues,

Today the CIHR Institute of Population & Public Health launched the ‘Transforming Public Health: 2021- Chief Public Health Officer (CPHO) of Canada report’ funding opportunity in partnership with the CIHR Centre for Research on Pandemic Preparedness and Health Emergencies. As the name suggests, this opportunity supports action on the challenges facing Canada’s public health systems as outlined in the CPHO’s 2021 report.

The COVID-19 pandemic has shone a light on the cracks in our public health systems that must be addressed so that we can tackle inequities and improve population health.

The vision outlined in the CPHO’s Transforming Public Health report will require cooperation and collaboration as we collectively work towards public health systems that are equitable, resilient and sustainable. In this spirit, the CPHO report was informed by a variety of consultations – which are summarized in the accompanying What We Heard Report as well as a series of commissioned reports – with public health organizations, professionals, and practitioners, including the CIHR Institute of Population & Public Health.

Achieving this vision will also require a greater understanding of how to best organize, resource, govern and deliver public health in Canada. This new CIHR funding opportunity will contribute to building an evidence base that can inform important and timely decisions about our public health systems and support rigorous public health systems research in Canada. The research priorities that are eligible for this funding are outlined in the ‘Generating Knowledge to Inform Public Health Systems Transformation’ document which is designed to complement the CPHO report.

This funding opportunity represents coordinated action across the Government of Canada’s Health Portfolio that aims to work towards a better future for all.
