I have always believed in the value of international scientific collaborations and have seen the benefits firsthand through my own research collaborations. A recent report by Elsevier notes that, “We see systematically that [these] international collaborations have higher scientific impact than national collaborations: worldwide the scientific impact of international collaborations are 52% above the world average while national partnerships are more or less at the world average. So, an international outlook that results in global partnerships contributes significantly to higher research impact”.

This is why it was exciting to learn that in November 2023, the Government of Canada closed negotiations with the European Commission to increase collaboration under Horizon Europe.  Canada has become an Associated Country under Pillar 2: Global challenges and European industrial competitiveness, which supports research relating to societal challenges and reinforces technological and industrial capacities through six clusters, including Health.

Canadian science, technology and innovation community can now apply to Horizon Europe Pillar 2 calls under association status in all calls that are open to international partners. This includes academics, industrial researchers, small-to-medium sized enterprises, non-profit and charity sector entities, and other research and innovation actors in Canada. Topics under each of the clusters is pre-defined and posted on the EU Funding and Tenders site.
