The Project Grants: Fall 2020 competition has approved 354 research grants for a total investment of approximately $274M.

For the Fall 2020 Project Grant competition, a total of 1285 individuals (including Chairs [59], Scientific Officers [115], reviewers [1112]) participated in 59 peer review committees. There were also 176 early career researcher (ECR) observers present during the peer review process.

What you should know about the Fall 2021 Project Grant competition
We stand by our commitment to remove the across-the-board cut as soon as possible. At the same time, we recognize that removing the across-the-board cut has important implications for our competitions, which include most notably the inherent risk of funding fewer grants. The following graph illustrates how eliminating the across-the-board cut may impact the number of grants funded.

The Project Grants: Spring 2019 competition has approved 382 research grants, plus an additional 21 bridge grants, for a total investment of approximately $275M.

Key considerations for sunsetting the Foundation Grant program
CIHR conducted a number of analyses of all completed Foundation Grant competitions, which revealed four main areas of concern: gender, age, institution size, and pillar of research. For comparison, these areas were also examined in the Project Grant program.

Establishing a Threshold for Application Inclusion in PRC Discussions
Analyses were undertaken to identify the threshold that would capture the largest percentage of applications approved following discussion at peer review committee (PRC) meeting, while minimizing the percentage of applications that would not be funded without PRC discussion.

This analysis examines the relationship between application rank within a panel, the percent rank score, and funding cutoffs.
